Bronchitis

Just when you think you have finally recovered from that terrible cold, you start experiencing heaviness in your chest. Every time you cough, it is accompanied by the release of phlegm. The chills and fever that come later make you feel even worse. However, this will not magically disappear because these are the typical symptoms of Bronchitis.

Bronchitis is a condition wherein there is acute inflammation of the air passage within the inner walls of the bronchi, which are the airways that connect the windpipe to the lungs. An individual suffering from Bronchitis will experience shortness of breath, chest congestion, and coughing that is accompanied by the expulsion of yellow or green mucous. Most people experience a bout of Bronchitis during the fall and winter seasons after experiencing a cold or flu infection.

Causes and Risk Factors

Acute Bronchitis is usually caused by the same bacteria that cause the flu and the common cold. It usually begins as a sore throat, common cold or sinus infection and develops into an infection in the thin mucous lining of the bronchial tree. Inflammation and mucous production increase as the body fights against the infection. Although the body reacts quickly to ward off the infection, it takes time for it to recover from the damage caused by constant coughing and wheezing. Acute Bronchitis is contagious, and it can also intensify if the infected individual is exposed to pollutants, smog, dust and primary or secondary cigarette smoke. In some cases the infection subsides when the exposure to the irritating element is stopped. Chronic Bronchitis is characterized as a type of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

This type of infection is usually caused by a continuous irritation in the bronchi resulting from factors like smoking, exposure to pollutants or repeated bouts of Acute Bronchitis. The bronchi produce excess mucous and the infection leads to a difficulty in breathing.

Additionally, Bronchitis is more likely to affect people with low immunities. For example, individuals suffering from respiratory disorders and the elderly are more susceptible to this illness. Bronchitis reduces a person’s immunity to fight against respiratory disorders like Asthma and increases the difficulty in overcoming conditions like cold, sinus infection and sore throat that can affect the respiratory system. It can also increase the severity of these illnesses.
