Measles

Symptoms of Measles

The symptoms of measles are usually evident after 10 to 14 days of being infected. Fever, cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis are seen in the initial stage. White, red, or grayish spots (Koplik spots) may be found in the mouth. Gradually, red rashes develop throughout the body, beginning with the forehead and moving on to cover the face, neck, arms, legs, and feet.

Natural Cures

Certain home remedies have been found to be beneficial in the treatment of measles. Here are a few suggestions:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C boosts the immunity and aids in speedy recovery. Some of the dietary sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits such as lemon, orange, and grapefruit, green vegetables such as celery, cabbage, cress, spinach, sorrel, parsley, horseradish, and other fruits such as berries, pineapple, and kiwi. Low appetite and lack of thirst can be treated by consuming orange juice and lemonade. Add honey and ginger to lemon juice to accentuate the healing properties.

Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and overall healing properties. A pinch of dry turmeric powder mixed with a few drops of honey and juice of bitter melon leaves can be given to an individual who is suffering from measles.

Other remedies

Powdered licorice can aid in treating cough, a typical symptom of measles. Mix powdered licorice in honey and consume to alleviate the symptoms of measles.
Barley water mixed with sweet almond oil can also help to treat the cough that usually affects most measles patients.
Take oatmeal baths to feel relief from itchiness and to heal the rashes on the skin.

Preventing Measles

Measles can largely be prevented by vaccines that raise the immunity against measles.
Visit a physician to receive an appropriate vaccination schedule. The first vaccination is usually given to children between 12 and 15 months of age. The second schedule follows when the children reach the age of four to six years old.
Apart from vaccination, there are certain tips that can help to prevent measles.

Follow proper hygiene practices and instill similar habits in children.
If you are suffering from measles, remain distant from other family members to avoid spreading the infection.
Consult a doctor and get vaccinated within three days of exposure to measles-infected people.
