Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that occurs when the skin cells replace themselves too quickly. The disorder is non-contagious in nature, but it is usually a lifelong and persistent ailment. There are several types of psoriasis, and the most common type is chronic plaque psoriasis.

Causes and Risk Factors

The causes of psoriasis are largely unknown. It may be caused by some immunological deficiencies or hereditary conditions. Some researchers believe it to be a disorder of excessive growth and reproduction of skin cells because psoriasis is a skin disease that signifies abnormal growth of the skin cells.

Typically, the skin cells move from the lowest skin layer where they are produced to the outermost layer (epidermis) throughout a period of approximately 30 days. These cells perish and flake off when they reach the outermost layer. However, in psoriasis this entire process happens within a matter of days and the excessive buildup of cells causes the skin to become inflamed and form thick, flakey scales.
