Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition that causes redness and breakouts on the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. It is also known as “adult acne” and is confused with acne or pimples because of the similarity in symptoms. Approximately 14 million Americans suffer from this condition and although this condition is not serious in nature, it can adversely affect the level of confidence and social behavior of those who suffer from it. In some individuals, rosacea is cyclic in nature so it appears and disappears intermittently. However, it is important to treat this condition in a timely manner to prevent it from aggravating and causing further discomfort.

Causes and Risk Factors

Rosacea may be caused as a result of a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Some believe that this condition results from a blood vessel disorder causing the facial capillaries to swell, a chronic bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal system caused by Helicobacter pylori bacterium, or a reaction to sun exposure.

More women than men suffer from rosacea. Additionally, individuals who are fair-skinned, have delicate or sensitive skin, and are in the age group of 30-50 years are more likely to suffer from this condition.

Some of the factors that can aggravate it or make it worse by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface are very hot foods or beverages, very spicy foods, excessive alcohol consumption, extreme temperature fluctuations, excessive exposure to sunlight, stress, anger, embarrassment, excessive physical exertion, hot baths or saunas, corticosteroids, and drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications.
