Snoring

Symptoms of Snoring

The loud, thumping noise that is typically associated with snoring is the most evident symptom of this condition. The noise may vary in intensity from low to high. Snoring can be of various types including soft, noisy, raspy, harsh, hoarse, or fluttering. Some may only snore while in particular sleeping postures while others may continue to snore incessantly. Difficulty in breathing during sleep and sleep deprivation are other common symptoms. A large number of individuals who snore tend to sleep with their mouths open and remain restless while sleeping. Snoring also leads to weariness during the daytime because it interferes with the quality of nighttime sleep.

Natural Cures

Try some of the following natural cures for snoring to manage this irritating condition:

Catnip

Catnip, also known as catmint, catswort, and field balm, is a member of the mint family of herbs. It is popularly used for treating anxiety, insomnia, and nervousness because of its sedative effects. Prepare a relaxing bedtime tea with this herb by adding one to two teaspoons of the dried aerial parts in one cup of hot water.

Lavender

Lavender is used to treat a wide range of ailments including insomnia, anxiety, depression, and mood disturbances. Lavender has calming, soothing, and anticonvulsive properties. It is used as aromatic oil that soothes and relaxes a tired body and thereby results in better sleep. To use lavender, pour several extracts into your bath or blend it with tea. A few sprigs of dried lavender can be sewn into the pillowcase of the snoring individual to inhale a pleasant lingering aroma during sleep.

Mint

Peppermint and spearmint work very well to relieve digestive disorders. They are also sleep-inducing herbs and can be consumed in the form of tea right before bedtime. Additionally, a few drops of essential oil of spearmint can be added on the bed or pillow to help to treat snoring.

Lifestyle and Snoring:

In order to restore peace and domestic harmony, certain lifestyle changes and precautions can help to stop or lower the intensity of snoring. Consider the following useful tips:

Maintain healthy weight through a nutritious and balanced diet and regular exercise.
Avoid smoking because it causes nasal congestion.
Avoid consuming alcohol at least four hours before going to bed.
Avoid breathing through the mouth because it may create an excess vacuum in the throat and increase the chances of snoring. You can use products that help to keep the mouth shut during sleep.
Sleep on your side and keep the head side of your bed slightly elevated.
Avoid using sleeping pills or sedatives and certain allergy medications such as antihistamines before going to sleep.
Have your nasal congestion or obstruction (such as deviated septum) treated by a doctor in case you are suffering from chronic congestion.
Limit your intake of sedatives because they are known to depress your central nervous system, which leads to excessive relaxation of muscles including the tissues in your throat.
